Given Hawksmoor’s reputation (4.4 star rating online!) and the recommendations I’d received from several friends, I was really looking forward to eating here! So to celebrate the end of term, 2 friends and I made a date to celebrate at the branch on Air Street.
Alas, we were set to be disappointed.
Doesn’t the monkfish look absolutely delicious?
Unfortunately, it tasted really bland (even with the lemon)! Also, it felt like the waitress was trying to upwell rather than think about what worked for the customer. It was available in 2 sizes (£24 and £48 respectively) and she advised me to go for the larger one. As I eat a lot (which I didn’t mention to the waitress), I did so but it was waaaay too much for me. I really don’t see how it could have worked for any another person with a normal appetite! I also specifically asked if it was a fillet and she said yes but it came on a bone! Thankfully, it was a huge one and not the typical small fish bone- I HATE those!!!
How can you go to a steakhouse and not have steak?? Well, my friends did 🙂 But both of them were not impressed by it either! And I do think Hawksmoor is being much too stingy here- it should come with at least some dressing by the side no? It turned out if we wanted any sauce we’d have to order separately….
For sides, we chose delicious sounding ones such as Triple Cooked Chips and Lobster Mac & Cheese.
But reality was not so delicious 😛 All that extra lard from the Triple Cooked Chips were just wasted calories- they tasted not much different from regular fish & chips chips. And the Cheese in the Lobster Mac was too simple in taste- it really needed a more complex cheese or herbs to pull the dish together. (Oh and did I mention the Mac was soggy?!)
Best thing we had was the dessert 🙂 But then, most desserts in UK- even in a Starbucks or Costa- are good 😛
To be fair, the waitress felt bad when she realised the monkfish had a bone so she gave us a piece of chocolate each. OK Let’s add 1/2 star for the service 🙂
In conclusion? A very mediocre 3 star meal/ dining experience. Despite attempts by other friends to make me give it another chance, I have no plans on going back to the Hawksmoor. Would love to hear what you think of it! 🙂
