The Good Life Centre (Southwark)

Not dressmaking classes per se but they do teach machine embroidery which would look amazing on clothes, as well as have a lot of sewing classes for home interiors such as curtains, blinds and lampshades.

Ray Stitch (Angel Islington)

The class I really want to try there is Recreate your favourite garment at £55

Fashion Museum

Slightly different from the typical sewing studio, they have tons of cool workshops such as “Couture Techniques” and Freehand pattern making etc.
Sew Over It (Islington & Clapham)

They have 2 venues and run a variety of regular workshops at both of them. Be warned, they book up fast though!!! I once tried booking a week in advance but everything was sold out! 😛

Sew It With Love

THIS PLACE IS RUBBISH. Being a small business owner myself, I try my best to support other independents and not leave negative reviews. But I am so annoyed at how unprofessional this place is that I had to leave that review. In bold. In Caps.

So what happened is I booked a class with them for £110. The day of the class- 7 hours before the class started- I was emailed and told the class was cancelled because the other participant had cancelled and they could no longer make a profit on the class. Firstly, it is really unprofessional to cancel so close to the starting time. (They do note on their website that they have the right to cancel close to the start time and not refund for travel costs so I wonder if this happens often?!) Imagine if I had not checked my email and gone directly to the class!!!! Furthermore, their cancellation policy is a minimum of 7 days before the class starts so why was I only told 7 hours before?

Secondly, I tried to be understanding so when asked if I preferred a refund or to move up to the next class, I asked for a refund without being irate about it. (I could not make the next class date.) However, I specifically asked for a cash or cheque refund. The reply I received was “I am not sure what a cash ir cheque is and we have just refunded the amount back to the card you paid with” (My bad for misspelling or- iPhone typing!) If you do not know what your customer wants, wouldn’t it be more professional to ASK them instead of assuming? Because of their presumptuousness, I lost £20 from the refund. So, to sum up:

  1. My plans were ruined
  2. I had to pay for the pleasure of having my schedule messed up, and no class

Fabrications (near Broadway Market)

They run a Craft Club on Thursdays (£5) and workshops on some Tuesdays and most Saturdays & Sundays.

Fashion Antidote (East London)

These are more intensive courses, from 5 days up to a few weeks, so more pricey (the cheapest one I see is £495 (!!))

PS If you love fashion, don’t forget we are holding a Make your own Mermaid Crown workshop at Drink Shop Do on 25 July. Part of ticket sales will be donated to a maritime charity (still looking for one so feel free to suggest! 🙂 )
